Chilmark Moor by William Lathrop

William Langson Lathrop, (1859-1938), "Chilmark Moor, Martha's Vineyard", 1930, oil on canvas, H. 25 x W. 30 inches, James A. Michener Art Museum. Gift of Marguerite and Gerry Lenfest.

In the late 1920s, artist William Lathrop built a sailboat, which he sailed for the next 10 years along the Jersey shore, Martha’s Vineyard, and Long Island Sound. During the next decade Lathrop painted landscapes of those locations until he died tragically when his sailboat sank off the coast of Long Island during a hurricane.
