Low Tide, Rockport, Maine by George Sotter

George Sotter, (1879-1953), Low Tide Rockport, Maine, n.d., oil on canvas, H. 26 x W. 32.25 inches, James A. Michener Art Museum. Gift of Marguerite and Gerry Lenfest Eleanor Polis.

In 1919 George W. Sotter and his wife relocated from Pittsburgh to Holicong, Pennsylvania, where Sotter established a stained-glass studio that would be his primary source of income for the rest of his life. Although Sotter is most remembered for his paintings of magical moonlit snow scenes, he also painted spectacular landscape vistas with cloud-filled skies as well as marine scenes, like Low Tide, Rockport, Maine.
